Glassdoor recently came out with its Employees’ Choice Awards – Best Places to Work 2016 and some great retail and restaurant companies made the list. (https://www.glassdoor.com/Best-Places-to-Work-LST_KQ0,19.htm). What better way to start a new year than to give some well-deserved recognition to those companies.
Not surprisingly, the majority of the “best places to work” are information technology companies, which makes it even more impressive that 6 different retail and restaurant companies made the list. Congratulations to the following:
In-N-Out Burger – In-N-Out Burger operates approximately 250 restaurants, primarily in California. It has 4 basic menu items and offers customized burgers. It is a private company headquartered in Irvine, CA and founded in 1948. (www.in-n-out.com)
Costco Wholesale Corp. – Costco Wholesale Corp. is the largest wholesale club operator in the United States. It has more than 590 warehouses around the world. It is a public company headquartered in Issaquah, WA and founded in 1983. (www.costco.com)
REI – Recreational Equipment, Inc. (“REI”) is the nation’s largest consumer cooperative. It has also made FORTUNE Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” every year since 1998. It is a private company headquartered in Kent, WA and founded in 1938. (www.rei.com)
H-E-B – H-E-B operates superstores, supermarkets and gourmet markets and is the largest private company in Texas. It is a private company headquartered in San Antonio, TX and founded in 1905. (www.heb.com)
Wegmans Food Markets – Wegmans Food Markets operates over 80 grocery stores in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. It ranks among the 100 largest private companies in the country. It is a private company headquartered in Rochester, NY and founded in 1916. (www.wegmans.com)

For those of you who did not make the list, here are a few comments made about the top companies by their own employees, so you know what to strive for in the coming year:
- “positive work environment”
- “work life balance for real, flex time, work from home”
- “great benefits”
- “potential for long-term career growth”
- “invests in their employees”
- “inspiring and challenging”
- “maintains positive energy”
- “workplace with a deep sense of humility and passion”
We can all appreciate how difficult it must be to work in the retail, restaurant and hospitality industry, especially over the holidays. That makes it even more impressive to see retail companies on the “best places to work” lists. For this reason, I also want to pay recognition to some of those retail, restaurant and hospitality companies who made FORTUNE Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in 2015 (http://fortune.com/best-companies/):
- Nordstrom
- Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants
- The Container Store
- Build-A-Bear Workshops
- Four Seasons Hotel & Resorts
- Marriott International
- Whole Foods Market
- L.L. Bean
- The Cheesecake Factory, Inc.
- Publix Supermarkets
- CarMax
- Hyatt Hotels Corp.
In a few months we will check back and see who made FORTUNE Magazine’s list for 2016.
Happy New Year!
